Today, UK Treasury Minister Danny Alexander announced additional government funding for superfast broadband in rural areas. He announced an additional £250 million in funding (which the Goverment expects to be matched by local authorities), to bring fixed superfast broadband to 95% of UK premises by 2017.
Taken together with 4G mobile broadband solutions, Danny Alexander expects superfast broadband (fixed or wireless) to be available to 99% of premises by 2018. The Government intends to work with industry to develop innovative fixed, wireless and mobile broadband solutions required to reach this target.
The current BDUK initiatives are intended to bring superfast broadband to 90% of premises by 2015.
